The lavender’s done blooming for the year, but we’re not slowing down — just moving indoors and out into the community.

September kicks off on the 10th with Under the Lavender Sky, a barn tour, field walk, and stargazing night with the Nature Conservancy and the Fleischmann Planetarium at the historic Faye Canyon Ranch, where our new field bloomed this year! The 11th brings Michelle Mulligan back to the barn for a pottery workshop, building mugs and earrings. We’ll be at Carson Farmers Market on the 12th and again on the 19th, 8:30am to 1pm under the purple canopy. On the 13th, Anna Pageau of Silver Anchor Farm walks us through building a winter wellness toolkit, and on the 20th, Marci Mendoza of Casa de Turquoise leads a pollinator earrings workshop. We’ll close out the month at the Genoa Candy Dance with Sierra Chef on the 26th and 27th, two days with over 400 vendors.

Lavender season may be over, but there’s still plenty happening at Sierra Shadows Lavender & Honey this September!

Big thanks to Anna Pageau of Silver Anchor Farm for joining us in the barn this weekend for a class on essential oils & aromatherapy!

Guests explored different oils, their uses, safety precautions — and blended their own custom creations to take home ~ Everyone also received samples of our lavendula angustifolia and Grosso essential oils, plus their own personal bottle of our fan-favorite Lavender Mist to use in their blends!

Anna is the Nevada rep for the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, bringing serious expertise to safe, informed aromatherapy practice.

✨ Under the Lavender Sky — September 10 ✨

Join us at the new field for an evening that blends Carson Valley history, new agricultural production and the night sky. We’ll start with a visit to the historic barn and a guided walk through our newest lavender field, a short presentation on lighting and its affects on pollinators and plants by The Nature Conservancy, then as dusk settles in, the Fleischmann Planetarium team will lead a live stargazing program — sharing views of nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters, with keepsake photos you can take home from the night.

Anna Pageau is an aromatherapist, herbalist and gardener, native to Northern Nevada. She has been a student of aromatherapy and herbalism since the late 90’s. After experiencing health issues for herself and her older son she began exploring ways to balance their long-term health. This resulted in years of utilizing essential oils and herbs. Along the way she found her passion and has gone on to receive multiple certifications in both aromatherapy and herbalism. She loves working with Mother Nature to support all that she offers us for wellness.

Learn the history and uses of essential oils and aromatherapy in this session. Products derived from our lavender and other natural ingredients will be used in this workshop.

Such a fun and unique way to close the summer season of events here at Sierra Shadows!

This morning, we welcomed @mbtheyogi and @astridcarolina.art for a retreat that began with a yoga practice, followed by a lavender bouquet, a then a beautiful brunch provided by @mbtheyogi. After the delicious meal, their guests were treated to a guided painting workshop with @astridcarolina.art 🎨

Guests enjoyed the scent of lavender, the occasional breeze in the willows, the squeals from our bff’s neighboring farm animals, and the busy buzz from the industrious pollinators as they frantically flitted from flower to flower. (No, AI did not help me write this 🤣 thus the craziness)

We cherish every guest who steps into our lavender and seeks a respite from the harried world around us. Your excitement for what we’ve cultivated makes it all worthwhile.

If you still haven’t come by, don’t worry. There are plenty of workshops on the calendar; more will be coming as soon as I can take a moment and add them to my website! 😜

And just because it’s the end of our big events in the lavender, we are still busy: harvesting, debudding, and distilling. 💜🐝

We have been working on our Pollinator Steward Certification through the Pollinator Partnership for a few years now. Today we officially became a Certified Pollinator Steward 🐝

What this means is that we have been intentionally building habitats for native pollinators on our lavender farm.

We also have been working to educate others on the importance of our native plant and animal species through our tours and workshops.

Everyone loves lavender!! And everyone loves the fun things we growers make with our lavender 💜

The sweet floral notes from our culinary lavender makes (we think) some of the best syrup around!!

Yesterday, we made our latest batch of syrup in the commercial kitchen, just in time for this evening’s Wine Walk in Genoa. Come by, say “Hello” and have a sip of this delightful concoction…or what we like to call our “Summer in a Bottle.” ☀️

Lavender smells great, and some of it actually tastes good, too! Don’t believe us, come try ours 💜

From field to still, it takes a village to make that lavender oil!

We’ve already been harvesting for buds and bunches. In the next few months we will be harvesting for oil. By leaving the plants in the field, the pollinators get a chance to enjoy all the blooms. Once we notice they have left the lavender, we begin the process to distill for oil.

The early birds miss the bees…on purpose! Yes, that’s us out in the lavender field at 5:30 this morning. With the oppressive heat we’ve been experiencing, we are trying to beat the temps and the buzzing bees 🐝 while we harvest and weed the field 💜

It’s fun to see which new cultivars are thriving in this location. Sadly, others are not doing so great. We lost all of our Provence so we replaced them with some of our “petites rebelles,” which are a different species and will bloom earlier than the other plants in the field next year. It’s an exciting experiment knowing that whatever the result, there will be beautiful blooms for all of us, people and pollinators.

“En plein air” is a French expression that became synonymous with the Impressionist movement in the 1860’s. It literally means “in the outdoors” but is used more specifically to describe painting in the outdoors while using natural light to capture the subject matter.
