Last night, I stumbled upon a tired bumblebee nestled between two stems of our Provence lavender. From there, I discovered a whole world of sleeping and tired little creatures, like the last video of the honey bee. This is a LONG reel, (and caption) but if you are able to take a moment and watch, you might be as relaxed as these critters were.

Back in 2018, we initially planted our lavender for our honey bees. Lavender is a perfect plant for the high desert as it doesn’t require a lot of water once established. It also feeds my soul ~ for those who know me and know my affinity to and affection for France and its beautiful fields in the south.

Our first 200 plants bloomed and buzzed chaotically that first year. We soon recognized the importance of planting other flowers and plants before and after our lavender bloomed so that all the pollinators who were enjoying the pollen and nectar provided by our lavender had more options. We decided to plant different species and cultivars of lavender, some that bloom earlier than our original lavender, double bloom or continually bloom once harvested.

In these past seven years, we have learned the importance of planting native plants. While all this lavender is amazing, many of our native insects have evolved with our native plants. Some NEED their native plants!

We have been working with @VitalBeeBuds to slowly replace our lawn and planting strips of native grasses, plants, and flowers. Also, our new field will hopefully be abuzz with activity next year, but we will eventually have native plants in pollinator strips and hedgerows there, as well.

We love lavender, but we also love bees, bumbles, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, moths…you get the picture. ALL of these critters need our help, now more than EVER!! Learn about integrated pest management so you don’t have to spray every time you think you see a “bad” bug or “weed,” plant things that are beneficial to different species of insects. Without them, we lose our birds, our bats, our fish, etc…you get the picture?

Our workshop kicked off with a tour of the lavender field and labyrinth where we handpicked our own sprigs to spark creativity for our paintings. Next, we indulged in delightful lavender-inspired treats and refreshments in the barn 💜. With Ashley's skilled guidance, we brought blank canvases to life, creating stunning moonlit lavender scenes. The variety of unique pieces produced was truly inspiring.

Pollinators are attracted to flowers that produce nectar and those that produce pollen. Did you know that lavender produces both?

As beekeepers, we love watching our honeybees enjoy the abundant purple blooms. But, did you also know that native bumblebees especially love these plants? Their longer tongues make it easier to access the nectar from the flower while the honeybee has to reach further into the flower. It takes our honeybees longer to do so, spending approximately 3 seconds on each flower! Watch the two posted videos to see the difference in time it takes for these two bees to feed on some of our plants in our demonstration garden this morning.

Community is everything! We're still blown away by the amazing support from our friends and family who joined us for three days of irrigation and planting in our new commercial lavender field. (We still have a few hundred angustifolias to plant as well as placing mulch for weed mitigation and a bee hive or two in the field.)🐝

We're excited to share our future harvest with everyone, especially those who got involved and a little messy! 💜 As a heartfelt thank you, they'll enjoy lavender for life! 😂

Two years ago, we started to build a crazy space for more of our lavender. We wanted a space for people to actually experience the sights and sounds of lavender. We completed the labyrinth in May of last year. On May 23, 2024, we finished planting over 300 new angustifolia babies in which we have five new different cultivars! (Three of which are excellent culinary cultivars!)

Today marks one year of growth! It’s exciting to see color in some of the buds. Yes, I think we are crazy. This was so much work. But, putting one’s head down and digging in the dirt is therapy.

Thanks for reading! I can’t wait to invite you out to experience the labyrinth this summer! July 5th is our first U-Pick day! Make sure to register so you can harvest your own bundle!

PS the labyrinth is situated where our daughter got married four years ago. I was tired of picking weeds, so why not pick weeds AND lavender? 😂🤷‍♀️…and yes, the dogs thought they were helping!

~ Bend Test: Bend a branch. If it’s flexible, there’s hope. If it snaps, it may be dead.

~ Lavender wakes up slowly in spring. If you don’t see any new growth by late May or early June (in our climate), it may be time to say “au revoir.”

☠️ Dead or Just Woody?
~ Older lavender can get very woody in the center. If your plant is mostly woody with little green, and pruning hasn’t helped over a season or two, it might be best to replace it.

✅ Time to Replace if:
~ No green growth by early summer.
~ Branches are brittle and snap easily.
~ Roots are dry, brittle, or rotted (rotted roots means overwatering-bad for lavender!!)
~ Plant has become more wood than bloom.

🪻Tip: Always plant lavender in a sunny, well-drained spot, and choose a lavender cultivar suited to your climate. We love Grosso, but our Provence is pretty showy here, as well!

We had a blast with our very own “Scent-sational Sandy” and her Special Mother’s Day Lotion (Bar) and Potion Workshop 💜 Using our beeswax and lavender buds and oil, guests created their own unique lotion bars. While it rained outside, guests poured themselves lemonade sweetened with our homemade lavender gourmet syrup. To sweeten the day further, these ladies were treated to our Lavender Fog Shortbread and French lavender vanilla cupcakes. 🧁 Finally, everyone went home with a special gift: our new honey lavender body scrub 💜

We thoroughly enjoyed this early Mother’s Day celebration!!

Our first lavender-inspired workshop with Michelle Mulligan Pottery was a blast! Most of us created beverage-worthy mugs… 🤣 Some of us (me, myself, and I) just have a hard time following directions! Good thing Michelle is so patient and kind!

We are definitely going to do more of these! Not because I need more practice (I do!) but because everyone had so much fun and learned so much!

After a long winter’s nap, your lavender might be looking a little rough around the edges—gray, twiggy, maybe even “dead.” But don’t pull it out just yet! This is exactly how it should look in early spring.

At Sierra Shadows Lavender, our fields are just starting to show signs of life again. Tiny green shoots are peeking through the silvery stems—proof that with a little patience, lavender does bounce back!

This summer, I’ll be offering a two-part workshop to show people how to harvest, dry, and debud their own lavender.

Meet the Makers: Silversmith & Pottery Artists

We are more than a lavender farm! We love gathering people together for unique and memorable events! Meet the skilled artisans leading our upcoming lavender-inspired workshops.

In our first workshop, and our first class of the season, we've invited the artist behind Casa de Turquoise to lead a silversmithing class where students will create a pair of lavender inspired silver and stone earrings.

Meet the Maker : Marci Mendoza

Born and raised by the ocean in Santa Barbara, her first jewelry supplies were shells given to her by neighbors who were divers. She began stringing them on pieces of thin leather, and wearing them around her wrists and neck.

Marci began wire wrapping natural gemstone beads or knotting them on colorful silk. When she couldn’t find quality focal pieces for her designs, she decided to start making them herself.

Five years ago she bought a torch and a jewelers saw and taught herself the art of metal/silversmithing and she hasn't looked back since.

Marci loves how elemental silversmithing is. To take fire, metals and beautiful stones from the earth and transform them into pieces of wearable art can feel a bit like magic. To put your heart and soul into pieces that speak to others and will last longer than our lifetimes is something very special and fulfilling.

A new year is upon us. But let us first reflect on the past: This year has been filled with countless moments of joy as we continued to welcome guests to our private and public events. We celebrated big birthdays and engagements with you; we had our first two U-Pick events with local artisans, our first Farm2Fork event with a winery and our favorite local chef, collaborations with local artists, bakers, chocolatiers, and potters, as well as tours with local gardeners, beekeepers, and Chamber groups. We loved going to markets and events around the Northern Nevada region and we are full of gratitude for those local shops (and hotels!) that carry our honey, lavender, and French linens.

This year also marked a dream come true for me! After initiating the Europe Trip for Sourh Tahoe high school students in 1996, I finally took an adult group to Provence for a magical week filled with laughter, amazing food, wine, amitié, and of course, lavender! We are currently working on our next trip for 2026!

We are now closed for the season as we wait for the bees to buzz, the birds to chirp, and the lavender to bloom. We look forward to welcoming you again. We are currently working on our calendar of events so you can make your plans! Our schedule will be posted on our website soon.

In the meantime, let’s be kind and thoughtful of others, including the four-legged and winged creatures with whom we share this beautiful space 💜
