Anna Pageau is an aromatherapist, herbalist, gardener, and native Nevadan. She currently serves as the Regional Director of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy for Nevada.

Behind-the-scenes, Part 1: The Not-So-Glamorous Part of Growing Lavender: Weeding

A weed is simply an unwanted plant. According to the USDA, UNR Extension, and the Nevada Department of Agriculture, weeds are considered either a "nuisance" or "noxious." Both categories of weed can impact soil, water, forage and crop yields, as well as displace wildlife and native plants. It's important to know the difference and how to mitigate these impacts.

Yes, we pull most of our weeds by hand because we are all about the pollinators - both our domestic honey bees AND the native pollinators that love lavender as much as we do. We use an integrated weed management program through prevention, physical or mechanical control (like weed-free mulch), and biological controls (like our sheep). When we have to use herbicides, our first line of defense is a vinegar-salt mixture.

PS We also planted a native hedgerow to help mitigate seed spread from weeds into our lavender. The plants are still itty-bitty, but as they grow, we will share photos!

Now you know! It's not glamorous, but it is rewarding!

My host mother’s crepes, made with generous slabs of butter, left a lasting impression - especially the stunning dish that held the butter. I recently shared this memory with Michelle Mulligan, and she crafted a replica just for me! Now, she’s offering a pottery class where we can create our own. Join us on April 11 from 9am to noon as Michelle leads the way in crafting the perfect butter dish.

Because snow is 90-95% trapped air, it acts like a cozy blanket over the soil and plant - keeping temperatures stable even when it’s frigid outside. Here in northern Nevada, our (typically) cold, dry winters and temperature swings from day to night are exactly what makes snow cover so valuable.

For lavender, stability is key - it’s not the cold that kills it, it’s the constant freeze-thaw cycles. A consistent layer of snow buffers our temperature swings and shields the crown from our drying high-desert winter winds.

So, the next time a storm rolls through the Sierras and blankets your garden, don’t feel sorry for your lavender - it’s actually pretty happy under all that snow!

We recently purchased a lavender harvester from New Zealand. This harvester is only available in New Zealand or China. We knew we would have some type of import tax aka tariff to pay but were surprised when we received a bill for a 50% tariff because the harvester is considered an aluminum derivative and not a machine!

Let’s Fact-Check statements our leaders have been saying about tariffs recently:

“Foreign countries pay the tariffs”

This is a frequently repeated but false claim. Tariffs are taxes or duties levied on imported goods, and they are paid to the U.S. government by the U.S.-based importer (companies, not foreign nations).

Reality: U.S. companies importing goods pay the tariffs. These costs are largely passed on to American consumers through higher prices or absorbed by the importing companies as lower profits.

“Tariffs do not raise prices for American consumers”

Related to the above, this claim is consistently fact-checked as false. Economists broadly agree that tariffs increase the price of goods for consumers.

Reality: Studies show that American individuals and businesses bear the overwhelming majority of the cost of recent tariffs on imported goods.

Historical evidence and recent studies show that tariffs are taxes that raise prices and reduce available quantities of goods and services for US businesses and consumers, resulting in lower income, reduced employment, and lower economic output.

So, if you didn’t already know, it’s really us, the American consumer, that pays the tariff. Thanks for letting me vent!

We took these photos two days ago, December 20th, before this new storm system rolled in. It’s amazing how well these babies did this year! We planted the plugs mid-June and have monitored their growth since then. We stopped watering back in October but they continued to grow and thrive. Now, the real test comes: winter, with its rain, snow, wind, and oftentimes, weird heat spells❄️

We’ll post more as the winter progresses as we wait in anticipation for this field’s first complete season!

In the meantime, Think Snow! ⛄️ and stay warm out there! ♥️
