…Imagine a world without man-made wars and patriarchal societies. Imagine a world led by women, mothers, life-givers. That’s a world I want to live in.

My daughters gifted me “Braiding Sweetgrass” and “The Serviceberry” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. These writings and reflections on our relationship with nature , science, and with each other, through an ecological consciousness based on indigenous teachings, has transformed the lens upon which I see the world. I only wish more people, including this world’s so-called leaders, could see the damage we continually perpetrate on our lands, our environments, and on each other.

We are still wrapped in winter’s arms, but spring is just around the corner!

We have two back-to-back events slated for this March: a Spring Pottery workshop with Michelle Mulligan and a special 4-part class on The Secrets of Tea Divining where we will teach you about tea blending and tea-leaf reading at the Minden Mill. We will be using our lavender in both workshops!

Did you know snow is actually one of the best things for your lavender in the winter?

Because snow is 90-95% trapped air, it acts like a cozy blanket over the soil and plant - keeping temperatures stable even when it’s frigid outside. Here in northern Nevada, our (typically) cold, dry winters and temperature swings from day to night are exactly what makes snow cover so valuable.

For lavender, stability is key - it’s not the cold that kills it, it’s the constant freeze-thaw cycles. A consistent layer of snow buffers our temperature swings and shields the crown from our drying high-desert winter winds.

So, the next time a storm rolls through the Sierras and blankets your garden, don’t feel sorry for your lavender - it’s actually pretty happy under all that snow!

We recently purchased a lavender harvester from New Zealand. This harvester is only available in New Zealand or China. We knew we would have some type of import tax aka tariff to pay but were surprised when we received a bill for a 50% tariff because the harvester is considered an aluminum derivative and not a machine!

Let’s Fact-Check statements our leaders have been saying about tariffs recently:

“Foreign countries pay the tariffs”

This is a frequently repeated but false claim. Tariffs are taxes or duties levied on imported goods, and they are paid to the U.S. government by the U.S.-based importer (companies, not foreign nations).

Reality: U.S. companies importing goods pay the tariffs. These costs are largely passed on to American consumers through higher prices or absorbed by the importing companies as lower profits.

“Tariffs do not raise prices for American consumers”

Related to the above, this claim is consistently fact-checked as false. Economists broadly agree that tariffs increase the price of goods for consumers.

Reality: Studies show that American individuals and businesses bear the overwhelming majority of the cost of recent tariffs on imported goods.

Historical evidence and recent studies show that tariffs are taxes that raise prices and reduce available quantities of goods and services for US businesses and consumers, resulting in lower income, reduced employment, and lower economic output.

So, if you didn’t already know, it’s really us, the American consumer, that pays the tariff. Thanks for letting me vent!

In our latest workshop, guests were invited on a sensory journey using an array of aromatic and botanic elements. Thank you to Chelsea and StaySea for their knowledge and guidance through smudge making, tasseology and Tarot card reading. What a magical afternoon we all had 🪄🥰

I had such a lovely time yesterday with the University Women's Club of Douglas County. Thank you for inviting me to speak on lavender and my Why! I love to share how I began this lavender adventure with others and in doing so, I hope to inspire others to learn how they can better connect with nature while supporting pollinators.

Thank you to everyone who helped plant the new field, cut their own bunch, made a wreath, sipped on lavender lemonade, painted a purple-hued vista, practiced yoga on the lawn, weaved ribbon for a lavender wand, nibbled on a lavender treat, celebrated a birthday in the barn, took a photo with a dog in the labyrinth, shopped in our petite boutique, gave the horse a carrot, named a baby lavender plant, attempted to pet a lamb, visited the bees, imprinted lavender in ceramic clay, hammered a lavender stamp into silver, laughed amongst new friends, learned how to make soap, and simply enjoyed themselves and shared this joy with others here at Sierra Shadows Lavender & Honey.

We are so grateful for you and the memories we created together in 2025.

We took these photos two days ago, December 20th, before this new storm system rolled in. It’s amazing how well these babies did this year! We planted the plugs mid-June and have monitored their growth since then. We stopped watering back in October but they continued to grow and thrive. Now, the real test comes: winter, with its rain, snow, wind, and oftentimes, weird heat spells❄️

We’ll post more as the winter progresses as we wait in anticipation for this field’s first complete season!

Years ago I bought some food wraps in a little health food store in Hawaii. During the Covid era, I was horrified at how much single-use plastic we were burning through so I learned how to make these durable, washable, and REUSABLE wraps using our beeswax!

Join us for the first of two wreath workshops at Minden Mill Distilling this November!

This first workshop will be working with DEAD (but not spooky) material from Blomma Flower Farm and Sierra Shadows Farm. Using a combination of fall foliage, you will learn how to create a beautiful and unique wreath to replace those Halloween decorations!

Minden Mill Distilling will be hosting us in their beautiful tasting room high above the Carson Valley. They will be providing the snacks and beverages for this workshop.

Did you know that lavender was used to protect against evil spirits and dangerous entities?

Its peaceful promotion as a sleep aid can help keep those nightmares at bay.

It is also believed that sprigs of dried lavender or sachets filled with lavender buds can be carried as personal protection or hung over doorways or windows to ward off any evil or negative spirits!

Dried lavender can be used in smudging for purification.

Bathing with lavender may promote spiritual awakening and relaxation.

Dried lavender was sprinkled on straw mattresses to keep the mice and their creepy crawly fleas away during the Black Plague.

Sweater Weather is officially here!

All the lavender has been pruned and readied for the approaching weather. The recent Frostmas event reminds us that our season has almost come to an end. We have a few more events on the calendar before we, like our lavender, snuggle in for the winter ahead.

We are so grateful for the summer we had and the people we’ve met along the way. We love sharing what we’ve learned about growing lavender in Northern Nevada these past eight years with our community. We have made so many friendships and have created lasting collaborations with other pollinator-loving people.

We cherish every moment and every opportunity we have had this past season to bring people together to spread beauty and kindness in our valley and beyond. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey!
