During the winter and spring months, our farm store is open during public workshops or events. Otherwise, we are only open by appointment. Please reach out to schedule a visit.

This June we are celebrating Lavender Growers Month and our new lavender field’s one year anniversary!

Last June, several of our amazing friends and family helped us plant more lavender on this historic ranch 💜 It’s great to see how much they’ve grown in such a short time. Blooms are already appearing.

Lavender takes a few years to reach full maturity; the first year one can expect no more than 2 bunches per plant, but by the third year, one can expect 8 to 10 bunches! (A bunch = 60 to 100 stems)

We can’t wait to invite you out to this field in the future! We see lots of Purple Potential with this new lavender.💜

In the meantime, we will be having a U-Pick in our mature lavender and lavender labyrinth at Sierra Shadows Farm on July 5th! Register online - link in bio.

Another breathtaking week in Provence filled with good food, new experiences to share with new friends, and so much fun 💜. As many of you know, I lived, studied and even worked in a tiny parfumerie in France when I was younger. I taught French for years at our local junior college before I planted my first lavender in 2018. 💜 As I’ve always said, “If I can’t live in Provence, I will bring it here.” Sometimes though, I still need to fill my soul with some singing cicadas and swaying olive trees. With the help of my dear friend, we have introduced several groups of people to the wonderment and beauty that is Provence. This week was as lovely as the last few. Photo captions: 1. We weren’t surprised that the lavender labyrinth is still not quite in bloom but we WERE surprised to find thousands of lavender volunteers in the pathways!! (We thought they were weeds!)

These babies have been carefully removed and repotted with love by my daughter 💕 Because these are the results of cross pollination (we have seven different cultivars of lavandula angustifolia or “true lavender” or “lavande officinale”) we can’t know exactly what they are! So, we will simply be calling them our Sierra Shadows Surprise Lavender! 💜 We will have these gifts from the garden available soon!

World Bee Day was celebrated globally on May 20…but we continue the celebration by reminding people that ALL bees matter! Yes, these honey bees 🐝 bring us joy but our native pollinators are struggling!

Here are some things you can do in your backyard:
• Plant Native Flowers 🌼 so you can provide constant food sources by choosing a variety of native wildflowers that bloom at different times throughout the year.

• Bee Pesticide-Herbicide Free 🪴 Limit or eliminate the use of insecticides and herbicides, or apply them sparingly if necessary.

• Bee Wild 🐝 Avoid over-tidying your yard. Many native bees nest in bare soil, dead twigs, or hollow stems. Also, green lawns are food deserts for our native pollinators! Consider allowing that lawn to get a little wild!

Our Lavender labyrinth is full of surprises today:

First, I’ve found several baby plants in the paths. I will attempt to transplant them as they all have decent root structures. Only problem is that they may be different from their parent plant as they come from seed! It will be fun figuring out what they are 🤪

The next surprise came with a warning cry! The killdeer are back with yet another nest: this time in our Twickel Purple lavender. I always hope for the best for these babies as they are exposed to the elements, including hawks and our barn cats. 😔

Yesterday’s dramatic skies were in stark contrast with the emerging bed of sunflowers 🌻 These sunflowers will be part of the late summer early fall forage for our bees and other native pollinators.

Paired with our lavender, these sunflowers also represent my journey from French instructor to ag-entrepreneur. What started with a dream to bring a little bit of Provence here through my company The Sunflower of Provence has evolved into something much more meaningful for me, and hopefully, for everyone who comes to experience what we’ve created.

Side-note: I am slowly merging my two businesses and their websites to create a more streamlined and easy experience for my customers. You can still find my tablecloths and French linens on @thesunflowerofprovence but I’ll be moving them to my lavender site.

Here’s to a productive and color-filled future 🌻💜

On Saturday, she discussed what and how to use natural products like hydrosols and essential oil in cleaning products. Participants enjoyed our tea and scones while making their own scrub blends to take home.

Behind-the-scenes, Part 1: The Not-So-Glamorous Part of Growing Lavender: Weeding

A weed is simply an unwanted plant. According to the USDA, UNR Extension, and the Nevada Department of Agriculture, weeds are considered either a "nuisance" or "noxious." Both categories of weed can impact soil, water, forage and crop yields, as well as displace wildlife and native plants. It's important to know the difference and how to mitigate these impacts.

Yes, we pull most of our weeds by hand because we are all about the pollinators - both our domestic honey bees AND the native pollinators that love lavender as much as we do. We use an integrated weed management program through prevention, physical or mechanical control (like weed-free mulch), and biological controls (like our sheep). When we have to use herbicides, our first line of defense is a vinegar-salt mixture.

PS We also planted a native hedgerow to help mitigate seed spread from weeds into our lavender. The plants are still itty-bitty, but as they grow, we will share photos!

Now you know! It's not glamorous, but it is rewarding!

My host mother’s crepes, made with generous slabs of butter, left a lasting impression - especially the stunning dish that held the butter. I recently shared this memory with Michelle Mulligan, and she crafted a replica just for me! Now, she’s offering a pottery class where we can create our own. Join us on April 11 from 9am to noon as Michelle leads the way in crafting the perfect butter dish.

Guests learned about tea blending, lavender, and intention setting. They then created their own unique sipping tea and bath tea blends. Additionally, they were treated to private tarot and tea leaf readings. ☕️

Thank you to Chelsea and StaySea for pouring their knowledge and passion into our cups. Thank you to the Minden Mill for the beautiful venue, as well as their unique mocktails and cocktails. Finally, thank you to Sierra Chef for providing tasty snacks for our guests 💕

Did you know snow is actually one of the best things for your lavender in the winter?

Because snow is 90-95% trapped air, it acts like a cozy blanket over the soil and plant - keeping temperatures stable even when it’s frigid outside. Here in northern Nevada, our (typically) cold, dry winters and temperature swings from day to night are exactly what makes snow cover so valuable.
