Excited to be a part of this year’s Garden Tour! We’ve been working on our The Pollinator Partnership project!

Excited to be a part of this year’s Garden Tour! We’ve been working on our The Pollinator Partnership project!

Our babies are starting to look like a real lavender field! This production field has four cultivars of lavandula angustifolia for our culinary creations and five lavandula x.intermedia for oil distillation for our other products, and bunches! You’ll be able to discover several of these new cultivars in our demonstration garden next season!

Besides lavender, we’ve partnered up with @vitalbeebuds and have started planting a hedgerow for the native pollinators and for weed mitigation along the west side (along the windy slope). We will start adding mulch before the fall to help with weeds and to keep the soil in place.

“Why lavender?” people ask. Well, lavender makes me happy. It evokes my memories of France. It’s therapeutic. It’s drought resistant and needs little water once established. Pollinators love it. So, why not? Life is short; get your hands dirty and go plant something!

As beekeepers, we think about what we plant, where we plant, when the plant will bloom, and what the plant will provide for our bees (and other pollinators, of course!)

When our lavender is almost completely harvested, the sunflowers make their stunning debut! Built for pollinators, these plants provide ample flowers that produce both carbohydrate-rich nectar and protein-laden pollen. Their large flower heads provide easy landing sites for insects. And, once the bees and other insects have taken their fill, the seeds are a necessary part of a bird’s diet! What a fantastic plant!! 🌻

We love watching the bees pack as much pollen into their little “pockets” as they buzz from head to head. (See the video!)

Fun fact: Most of these sunflowers are volunteers from last year! However, we do save some of the seed heads for starts every year before the birds take their fill.

Last night, I stumbled upon a tired bumblebee nestled between two stems of our Provence lavender. From there, I discovered a whole world of sleeping and tired little creatures, like the last video of the honey bee. This is a LONG reel, (and caption) but if you are able to take a moment and watch, you might be as relaxed as these critters were.

Back in 2018, we initially planted our lavender for our honey bees. Lavender is a perfect plant for the high desert as it doesn’t require a lot of water once established. It also feeds my soul ~ for those who know me and know my affinity to and affection for France and its beautiful fields in the south.

Our first 200 plants bloomed and buzzed chaotically that first year. We soon recognized the importance of planting other flowers and plants before and after our lavender bloomed so that all the pollinators who were enjoying the pollen and nectar provided by our lavender had more options. We decided to plant different species and cultivars of lavender, some that bloom earlier than our original lavender, double bloom or continually bloom once harvested.

In these past seven years, we have learned the importance of planting native plants. While all this lavender is amazing, many of our native insects have evolved with our native plants. Some NEED their native plants!

We have been working with @VitalBeeBuds to slowly replace our lawn and planting strips of native grasses, plants, and flowers. Also, our new field will hopefully be abuzz with activity next year, but we will eventually have native plants in pollinator strips and hedgerows there, as well.

We love lavender, but we also love bees, bumbles, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, moths…you get the picture. ALL of these critters need our help, now more than EVER!! Learn about integrated pest management so you don’t have to spray every time you think you see a “bad” bug or “weed,” plant things that are beneficial to different species of insects. Without them, we lose our birds, our bats, our fish, etc…you get the picture?

It also feeds my soul ~ for those who know me and know my affinity to and affection for France and its beautiful fields in the south.

Our first 200 plants bloomed and buzzed chaotically that first year. We soon recognized the importance of planting other flowers and plants before and after our lavender bloomed so that all the pollinators who were enjoying the pollen and nectar provided by our lavender had more options. We decided to plant different species and cultivars of lavender, some that bloom earlier than our original lavender, double bloom or continually bloom once harvested.

In these past seven years, we have learned the importance of planting native plants. While all this lavender is amazing, many of our native insects have evolved with our native plants. Some NEED their native plants!

We have been working with @VitalBeeBuds to slowly replace our lawn and planting strips of native grasses, plants, and flowers. Also, our new field will hopefully be abuzz with activity next year, but we will eventually have native plants in pollinator strips and hedgerows there, as well.

We love lavender, but we also love bees, bumbles, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies, moths…you get the picture. ALL of these critters need our help, now more than EVER!! Learn about integrated pest management so you don’t have to spray every time you think you see a “bad” bug or “weed,” plant things that are beneficial to different species of insects. Without them, we lose our birds, our bats, our fish, etc…you get the picture?
