Sweater Weather is officially here!

All the lavender has been pruned and readied for the approaching weather. The recent Frostmas event reminds us that our season has almost come to an end. We have a few more events on the calendar before we, like our lavender, snuggle in for the winter ahead.

We are so grateful for the summer we had and the people we’ve met along the way. We love sharing what we’ve learned about growing lavender in Northern Nevada these past eight years with our community. We have made so many friendships and have created lasting collaborations with other pollinator-loving people.

We cherish every moment and every opportunity we have had this past season to bring people together to spread beauty and kindness in our valley and beyond. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey!

Excited to be a part of this year’s Garden Tour! We’ve been working on our The Pollinator Partnership project!

Our babies are starting to look like a real lavender field! This production field has four cultivars of lavandula angustifolia for our culinary creations and five lavandula x.intermedia for oil distillation for our other products, and bunches! You’ll be able to discover several of these new cultivars in our demonstration garden next season!

Besides lavender, we’ve partnered up with @vitalbeebuds and have started planting a hedgerow for the native pollinators and for weed mitigation along the west side (along the windy slope). We will start adding mulch before the fall to help with weeds and to keep the soil in place.

“Why lavender?” people ask. Well, lavender makes me happy. It evokes my memories of France. It’s therapeutic. It’s drought resistant and needs little water once established. Pollinators love it. So, why not? Life is short; get your hands dirty and go plant something!

As beekeepers, we think about what we plant, where we plant, when the plant will bloom, and what the plant will provide for our bees (and other pollinators, of course!)

When our lavender is almost completely harvested, the sunflowers make their stunning debut! Built for pollinators, these plants provide ample flowers that produce both carbohydrate-rich nectar and protein-laden pollen. Their large flower heads provide easy landing sites for insects. And, once the bees and other insects have taken their fill, the seeds are a necessary part of a bird’s diet! What a fantastic plant!! 🌻

We love watching the bees pack as much pollen into their little “pockets” as they buzz from head to head. (See the video!)

Fun fact: Most of these sunflowers are volunteers from last year! However, we do save some of the seed heads for starts every year before the birds take their fill.
